He grew up surrounded by “good music and art” in his family home on the upper West Side. His father is fashion photographer Arthur Elgort. When he was 9 his mom brought him to an audition at the School of American Ballet. “I hated the ballet but I liked performing,” says Elgort. “I did 20 shows and I couldn’t couldn’t get the smile off my face. He wore the same grin during his seven summers at Stagedoor Manor, the performing arts camp for kids in the Catskills. While there he played Collins in “Rent” and the title role in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The experience came in handy for high-school roles — Link Larson in “Hairspray” and Sky Masterson in “Guys and Dolls.
