Huge crowd greets Gagarin in Delhi

29: Major Yuri Gagarin, the Soviet Cosmonaut, arrived here by air at 11. A crowd of over 5,000 people who had thronged the airport gave him a tumultuous welcome. As the silvery Tu-18 carrying Major Gagarin came to a halt at the Palam airport exactly at 11-30 am, the crowd surged forward making it difficult for the dignitaries to go to the foot of the gangway and receive the Soviet spaceman. He was welcomed on behalf of the Government of India by Mr Humayun Kabir, Minister for Scientific and Cultural Affairs. Others present included Mrs Indira Gandhi, Mrs Lakshmi Menon, Deputy Minister of External Affairs Ministry, the Soviet Ambassador, Mr I. A.
